When considering the purchase of a fine quality, hand-made rug, you may be surprised to know that there actually is a difference between Oriental Rugs and Persian rugs. Aside from the fact that true Persian rugs are made only in Iran and Oriental rugs are made everywhere else in Asia, there is a physical difference in their construction. The distinguishing factor may be difficult to see for the untrained eye, but Persian rugs are hand knotted with an asymmetrical knot while oriental rugs are crafted using a symmetrical knot. The symmetrical knot adds a small degree of bulk to the overall rug, but the quality of a well made Oriental rug can certainly stand up against a Persian rug. Both rugs have a deep and rich history across the globe and will make a bold statement in any room.
